71 new Fellow Members at OSA

Seventy-one members of the Optical Society (OSA) are to be recognised individually as Fellow Members by the OSA Board of Directors during 2014. Regular members who have contributed significantly to the optics and photonics fields are eligible for election based on a number of areas.

‘The distinction of OSA Fellow signifies members who are at the top of the optics and photonics profession,’ said OSA president Donna Strickland. 'On behalf of OSA, I am pleased to acknowledge their outstanding contributions and honour my OSA colleagues with this well-deserved distinction.’

The areas for consideration are the member's overall impact on optics, as gauged through a number of factors such as specific scientific, engineering, and technological contributions, a record of significant publications or patents related to optics, technical leadership in the field, and service to OSA and the global optics community.

Current fellow members recommend candidates to the OSA board of directors in a highly competitive process, as only up to 10 per cent of the OSA membership can be a fellow. According to the OSA, more than 40 per cent of the fellows selected this year reside outside of the United States.
