Thorlabs is to integrate Boston Micromachines Corporations' (BMC) adaptive optics within its own photonics equipment. It is hoped the collaboration will encourage the use of the deformable mirrors within the research community.
As part of the collaboration, Alex Cable, president of Thorlabs, has joined BMC's board of directors. He has already made significant investments within the company, and will play an advisory role. Cable called the partnership 'an evolutionary step for the commercialisation of adaptive optics technology'.
The two companies have already collaborated on an adaptive scanning microscope, developed at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The device uses BMC's technology, and was licensed to Thorlabs earlier this year.
