NKT strengthens materials processing business with Onefive acquisition

NKT Photonics has entered into an agreement to acquire Onefive, an ultrafast laser manufacturer headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland. According to NKT, the acquisition will strengthen its material processing business by adding complementary know-how and products to the portfolio.

The agreement is expected to close in the beginning of September 2017.

Founded in 2005, Onefive specialises in ultrafast lasers, in particular femto- and picosecond systems. Onefive’s customers are mainly in the medical and life science segments, but they also supply lasers to the industrial material processing and the scientific markets. The company employs 41 people that are mainly based in Zurich where the main production facilities are located, and in a smaller site in Berlin under the name Advanced Laser Diode Systems.

NKT Photonics’ increased activity level in the material processing segment will be an add-on to Onefive’s already strong presence in the medical market. Here, the company’s ISO13485 certification is an important requirement, and supply and support to the medical market will continue and expand going forward.

The strengthening of NKT Photonics’ market position was initiated one-and-a-half years ago with the acquisition of UK-based Fianium that specialises in supercontinuum and ultrafast lasers.

NKT Photonics’ CEO, Basil Garabet, commented: 'We are pleased to add Onefive to the NKT Photonics family. It is a key element of our strategy to grow our business in the burgeoning material processing market. With Onefive, we significantly strengthen and enhance our product offering and know-how in this exciting market.'
