Pacer has introduced new light-to-digital converters from TAOS, which are specifically designed to extend the battery-life of display panels, and to provide optimum viewing in diverse lighting conditions. The devices enable active management of display panel backlighting, which can account for up to 40 per cent of total platform power.
The TSL2560 and TSL2561 transform light intensity into a digital signal output capable of direct I2C (TSL2561) or SMBus (TSL2560) interface. From these outputs, a microcontroller can derive illuminance (ambient light level) in lux, using an empirical formula to approximate the human eye.
