Since 2021, Tim Kunze has been the CEO of Fusion Bionic, which focuses on the commercialisation of laser texturing solutions using direct laser interference patterning for large-area and high-speed laser surface functionalisation. Prior to that, Kunze led the surface functionalisation team at Fraunhofer IWS.
He believes the next big development in the field will be the upscaling of the average laser power (for laser manufacturers) and improved beam delivery technologies (technology providers) to meet the demands of large-area surface processing.
‘More and more applications require the need for large-area treatments to change the surface properties in a desired way, especially the substitution of established surface finishing technologies, such as chemical etching and coating technologies. Laser processing can pave the way to a much greener and sustainable surface processing,’ he said.
