The University of Dundee has partnered with Samsung Electronics subsidiary NeuroLogica to use the firm's latest computed tomography (CT) scanner technology, equipped with photon counting detectors (PCDs), for patient tissue analysis.
NeuroLogica’s ‘OmniTom Elite’ system will be used for both analysing differences in patients' tissue characteristics, as well as enhancing image quality and resolution of the University’s current imaging practices.
Photon counting is a next-generation CT technology that sorts the different energies of x-rays after they have passed through the scan field. The multiple sets of CT data are acquired at the same time with configurable energy thresholds, providing potentially more accurate visualisation and segmentation of bone, blood clots, plaque, haemorrhage and intracranial tumours. PCD-equipped CT also has the potential to lower the dosage requirements and alter the use of injected contrast.
According to the partners, the OmniTom Elite PCD, which was developed in Danvers, Massachusetts, in collaboration with Samsung, represents an important advancement in CT technology.
“With NeuroLogica’s new, emerging technologies, we are currently witnessing one of the largest innovations in medical imaging in the last decade,” confirmed Professor Iris Grunwald, Chair of Neuroradiology at the University of Dundee and a key facilitator of the new partnership. “By utilising the state-of-the-art equipment alongside the University of Dundee’s unique research and clinical expertise, together we can work to modernise the future of patient care.”
Grunwald is also an executive member of SINAPSE – Scottish Imaging Network: A Platform for Scientific Excellence, and has previously worked with NeuroLogica to improve pre-hospital imaging on Mobile Stroke Unit ambulances.
Helen-Donald Simpson, Manager of the University of Dundee’s Tayside Innovation MedTech Ecosystem (TIME), rermarked that the new partnership "represents a quantum leap in healthcare, allowing us to stay at the forefront in imaging and research internationally, while also enhancing patient diagnostics.”
Jason Koshnitsky, Senior Director of Global Sales and Marketing for NeuroLogica, believes the new collaboration with the University of Dundee will open the pathway to great synergy for accelerating the pace of innovation in medical imaging.
